01 / Product overview

Geofabric is a permeable plastic fabric, made from polyester or polypropolenethat is used in construction, landscaping and in the building of retaining walls.  Made from interlocked polypropylene filaments. It acts like a heavy-duty mesh or sack, offering high tensile strength and load support for driveways, paths, and road bases.

Laying it: line the trench behind the wall, lay the ag pipe and gravel, then fold the fabric back over the top of the gravel before backfilling with soil.

Choosing a width: 1m wide suits lower walls. The 2m roll lets you wrap the full gravel zone on higher walls. Rolls come in 20m and 50m lengths.

Also order: ag pipe for the base of the wall.

Check your wall design

In Queensland, walls over 1m high, or walls supporting a load such as a driveway or building, generally need an engineer's design and council approval. Confirm sleeper and post sizes against your design before ordering.

04 / Product FAQs

Before you order.

What is geofabric used for behind a retaining wall?

Geofabric lines the drainage gravel behind a retaining wall. It lets water pass through but stops fine soil washing into the gravel, so the gravel and ag pipe keep draining for years. Geofabric is a filter and separation layer only. It does not add strength or hold the wall up.

Does geofabric stop weeds?

Not reliably. Geofabric is made for drainage, filtration and separation, not weed control. It can slow weeds growing up from the soil below, but weeds can still take hold in soil and seeds that settle on top of it. Use it for what it does best: keeping soil out of drainage gravel and separating layers under paths, driveways and retaining walls.

What is the difference between geofabric and weed mat?

Our geofabric is a non-woven geotextile. It is felt-like and designed to let water through while holding soil back, which is what a drain needs. Weed mat is usually a thinner woven fabric made to block weeds in garden beds, and it can restrict water flow. For retaining wall drainage and separation under gravel, use geofabric.

How much geofabric do I need for a retaining wall?

Geofabric runs the full length of the wall, lining the back of the drainage gravel from the pipe to just below the surface. As a guide, allow about 1m of fabric width per 600mm of wall height, plus the base. A 1m wide roll suits lower walls and the 2m wide roll suits higher walls. Rolls come in 1m x 20m, 1m x 50m and 2m x 50m.
