Choose the right product
The tools each stage needs.
Wall building follows the same method every time: set out, dig, set the posts, lay the sleepers, then drain and backfill. Hand tools cover most low retaining walls. The equipment you hire or buy will vary with the height of the wall, the soil and the access to your yard.
Retaining wall calculator| Stage | Tools | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Set out | String lines, stakes, tape and marking paint | Check the line at the head and foot of the wall |
| Dig | Auger or post hole digger, shovel | Hole depth comes from your wall design |
| Set posts | Level, braces, concrete mixing gear | Brace each post until the concrete cures |
| Install sleepers | Sleeper lifter, rubber mallet | Keep feet clear when you lay each sleeper |
| Finish | Grinder with a diamond blade, cold galvanising paint | Cut outdoors and seal cut steel |
Wear eye, ear and dust protection when you cut concrete or steel. Lifting gear has a load limit. Check it against the weight of your sleepers.

What tools do I need to build a retaining wall?
For a low sleeper wall, the essential list is short: string lines and stakes, a level, a way to dig the post holes, and something to lift the sleepers. A hammer and a grinder are handy for the rest. Good quality tools make the job quicker, which is one of their many benefits.
Should I buy or hire?
Our advice: hire the big items and buy the small ones. Hiring an auger for a day is usually cheaper than buying one. A sleeper lifter can be worth owning if you construct walls often, and it will save money over time. We can advise on what is optional for your job.
Are these tools for block walls or other structures?
No. Blocks, bricks and stones need different tools, and so do pool fencing, gates and other structures. This range is for the sleeper wall industry: walls that retain soil for garden beds, driveways and outdoor space. A sleeper wall retains soil with posts and sleepers, not with the mass of the wall.
How do I look after the tools and the site?
Wash concrete off tools before it sets. Cleaning is easier on the day. Lay boards over grass to protect the surface where you carry sleepers. Sealing cut steel with cold galvanising paint restores its durability.
Can a first-timer do this?
A low wall is a fair undertaking for a careful first-timer. The features that matter are straight lines, plumb posts and good drainage. Strength comes from the footing forms and concrete, so do not rush them. Taller walls need an engineer.
Is the range complete?
The range on this website is limited to the tools we see used on sleeper wall construction. If you need something for installation that is not listed, ask us. We create each quote with ease of delivery in mind.
